How to estimate a landscaping job
Separate labor from materials from equipment — it makes your number defensible and easy to adjust. Measure planting beds and sod in square feet, bulk material in cubic yards, and price plants and trees each. Add a markup on materials, include hauling and dump fees, and set a deposit to cover what you order up front. The running total and deposit split update as you go.
What to include in a landscaping estimate
- Labor by task — bed prep, planting, sod, hardscape, grading.
- Materials with quantities — mulch and soil by the yard, sod by the foot, plants each.
- Equipment — skid steer, mini-ex, or dump trailer if the job needs them.
- Disposal and dump fees.
- Deposit + terms — cover material orders and note site conditions that could change the price.
Protect your price with terms
